Motivating with Zero Budget

Gabor Holch

There are two conflicting views on motivation that I often meet in multinational companies and growing SMEs. They are both based on a misconception of how motivation works, and both can be damaging to the company:

ONE: Motivation is an internal and very abstract thing. You either have it or don’t, there is little the company can do.
TWO: Motivation equals money (plus cars, computers and other stuff).

The biggest damage is that leaders who hold either of these views will never try to unlock the real power of motivation. That is why, for the past 4 years, we have worked together with professionals and executives in training teams to work on the following problem:

Q&A: Finding and working with a mentor

Question: “Any advice on finding and working with a mentor?” (Kristine, Consumer Marketing professional, USA)

Answer, Gabor Holch:

“As opposed to coaches, mentors are in a seniority-based relationship with the mentee in an organization or a professional field. Having said that, one of the biggest challenges is that many senior professionals have never thought of becoming a mentor. That is why companies work better if they set up an organized system of internal mentoring.

We help our clients with creating internal mentoring systems. However, you can also just read up on mentoring and as you do, note down any names that spring to mind who could be your mentor. You can then approach a couple of them, explain what a mentor is, and find out if they are motivated to work with you in that relationship.

My guess is that they will be :-)
